Pages are missing from several rare books in a Venetian library. Commissario Guido Brunetti discovers the last person to request the book was an American professor who, after further investigation, does not exist. The list of suspects grows and an elderly library patron is brutally murdered. Brunetti is left to ponder what determines innocence or guilt.
